Platoplays™: Generative AI for Platypus Inspired Toy Brand

Platoplays™: Generative AI for Platypus Inspired Toy Brand

By Tojin T. Eapen

We used advanced text-to-image generation techniques to create designs for "Platoplays," a concept brand of educational toys inspired by the appearance of the platypus. The goal of this project was to assess the capabilities of generative AI models in producing novel and appealing product designs for platypus-inspired toys that can be manufactured and sold by customers. The mascot for the brand is a platypus named Plato whose image was generated by Midjourney based on our description.

Platoplays™ is an educational program that aims to teach children both creativity and business skills through the creation of unique, imaginary characters. The program is designed for customers, typically children, who purchase a "license to manufacture" or L2M card with a unique, randomly allocated image of an imaginary character with eccentric features similar to those of the platypus. Some potential product designs are shown below.

The collage below depicts another set of 20 Platoplays™ toy designs that may be printed on the L2M cards. The goal of the user is to construct a model of the toy using basic materials such as modeling clay, fabric, and wood.

Once the toy is constructed, the child has the option to sell or trade the toy on an online marketplace. Platoplays™ will assist users in developing the product concept and marketing it.  Additionally, the child has the option to give Platoplays™ the right to manufacture the product at a cost, in return for a share of the profit. This process allows children to learn valuable business skills such as manufacturing and marketing while expressing their creativity.

This post is part of a series of articles on the use of generative AI for bioinspired product ideation. The use of AI for product concept generation allows for the quick creation of many potentially novel designs, which could then be evaluated and refined to select the most promising concepts to move to the next stage of the product development process.
