For this project, we used AI tools including chatGPT and Stable Diffusion to design a line of concept shoes called "Tigoes," which were inspired by the appearance and characteristics of tigers. Our aim was to investigate the potential of AI in the process of generating product ideas.

To begin, we utilized chatGPT to generate descriptions of product concepts. These descriptions were then used as prompts for the text-to-image converter, which created visual representations of the Tigoes based on the provided descriptions. This allowed us to systematically generate a wide range of Tigoes concepts for analysis and evaluation.

The prompt we provided for the creation of Tigoes was as follows: "Create a realistic image of a tiger-inspired shoe that combines the visual features of a tiger stripe pattern on the upper part of the shoe, a tiger face design on the tongue, gold accents on the heel and eyelets, and a plush inner lining, with the functional features of a sole with a pattern that mimics the pads on a tiger's paw, a lacing system inspired by the muscles in a tiger's hind legs, a padded collar and tongue inspired by the thick fur on a tiger's neck, a padded insole inspired by the cushioning pads on a tiger's paw, and mesh paneling inspired by the spaces between a tiger's fur."
This prompt was used to generate the below designs for tiger-inspired shoes using Midjourney.
This prompt was intended to guide the AI in generating concepts that were both realistic and imaginative, incorporating both the visual and functional features of tigers. However, most product concepts generated were regular shoes with tiger stripe patterns. Few designs featured novel functional elements, including those supplied in the prompt.

This post is part of a series of articles on the use of
generative AI for bioinspired product ideation. The use of AI for product concept generation allows for the quick creation of many potentially novel designs, which could then be evaluated and refined to select the most promising concepts to move to the next stage of the product development process.
